Twitter Suspends True the Vote's Account, Claims Military Ballot Deadline Tweet Violates Rules
Tweet Was Encouraging Citizens to Confirm Their County’s Military Ballots Were Mailed on Time

HOUSTON, Texas – Catherine Engelbrecht, founder and president of True the Vote, released the following statement today after Twitter suspended True the Vote’s account for a tweet regarding military ballots:

"Today Twitter temporarily suspended True the Vote’s account. The notice was attached to a tweet that True the Vote posted on September 15 (three days ago), encouraging citizens to confirm their county’s military ballots were mailed on time. To be clear, True the Vote, an election integrity advocacy organization, was sending out information of public interest regarding deadlines for our military voters, pursuant to the 'Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment' Act, federal law, which requires states to send absentee ballots to UOCAVA voters at least 45 days before federal elections.

"This information in no way violates Twitter’s terms of service. The only possible explanations for such action is, one, that Twitter is seeking to stifle organizations that are sharing factual information about our upcoming election, or two, that Twitter is punishing True the Vote after President Trump retweeted our post on September 17 – or perhaps both. True the Vote has appealed this violation and expects Twitter to take immediate action to restore our account so that we can continue sharing information that is critical to voters ahead of this important election."

The original tweet raises awareness about the last business day before the 45-day deadline and references True the Vote's press release: True the Vote Calls on Citizens to Help Protect the Ballots of U.S. Military Serving Overseas. The tweet also links to the Call Your County page on True the Vote's website.
